On your mark, get set, GO…..all in for the 5K walk/run to benefit women in need of assistance for diagnostics and services related to breast cancer.

All proceeds from the event are donated to provide health care to women in Benton County.

The event is Friday, June 23, at Riverside Park. The kids fun run starts at 5:30 PM with the 5K run and 1 mile walk at 6:00 PM. Photo booth, hair painting, and massages are just a few of the fun activities the organizers have lined up. Fireworks and entertainment in the park follow the event. The race event is chipped timed. Registration is only available online HERE. To receive a race t-shirt, registration needs to be made by June 11, though registration remains open to race time. If you would like to make a contribution but aren’t interested in participating register to make your donation by June 11 and still receive a free t-shirt.

Each year has been more than just a 5K, it’s also a kick-off to Party In The Park, as well as something of a mini-family reunion for many. “I’m excited that my whole family comes together to participate in the event,” says Lu Karr, one of the event organizers for Benton County Survivors. “Daughter Maggie and son-in-law Jeff Mangold and their family have participated every year, and for the past two years our son and daughter-in-law and their family comes home from Denver, Colorado, to participate as well.”

Robin Martin, Director of the Virginia Gay Hospital Health Care Foundation, says the entire event is like a big celebration. “In all the fun it’s easy to forget that for many women, gaining access to diagnostics, and paying for clinic visits and other expenses related to diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer can be incredibly stressful. In partnership with Survivors of Benton County, we’re excited to raise the funds and make them available to women who can use a little help.”

Proceeds from this 5K will go to the Gifts of Hope Fund at Virginia Gay Hospital. Gifts of Hope is a fund created to provide free mammograms and diagnostic services to those who need financial assistance. It will pay for a clinic visit, testing, and diagnostic analysis of those tests to determine next steps, as well as Pap tests and/or pelvic exams. Funds are meant for people who have no insurance; have a health insurance policy that does not pay for these services; and those who cannot pay deductible or co-insurance amounts. No application is necessary.

The Benton County Survivor Group has been instrumental in raising funds for women primarily through the Party in Pink 5k race held each June in conjunction with Party In The Park.
